Gifford’s Famous Ice cream comes to you from a small yellow clapboard factory in the rural town of Skowhegan, Maine. It all started with our family recipes, created in part by our great grandparents and passed down through five generations.
We use the finest premium ingredients, but it’s not just what’s in our ice cream that makes every flavor unique. It’s how we make our ice cream that makes all the difference.
We craft our mix and 90% of our ripples from scratch, and use a special blend of fresh milk and cream from local farms, delivered directly to the ice cream plant several times per week. This rich, creamy blend is the delicious base for all of Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream flavors.
Once the flavors are blended in our mixing tanks, we slow churn each one in our antique Cherry Burrell freezers. We believe these 1940s-era machines are one of the secrets behind our rich, creamy ice cream.
After the slow-churning process, we carefully fold in the delicious “extras”– like chunks of cookie dough, real pistachios, almonds, walnuts, or pecans, whole strawberries, or Maine wild blueberries from just up the road. Many flavors then get a boost from a homemade fudge, caramel, or fruit ripple or swirl as they are being poured into individual retail or bulk containers.
From there, it’s into the deep freeze, where the packaged ice cream travels by conveyor belt through a special hardening tunnel with high wind velocity (yes, we add wind to make it colder!) and subfreezing temperatures plummeting to 60 degrees below zero. For up to 8 hours our ice cream endures some of the coldest temperatures on earth!
It may seem a little crazy to send every container of ice cream through the equivalent of a trip to the North Pole. But our family name is on every package, and our reputation is on the line with every scoop. So using the best ingredients and a proven process for making world-class ice cream makes sense to us. And if we have to wear hats and parkas in August, it’s more than worth it because it helps to produce a smoother, creamier ice cream. After all, we want to make sure you’ll always come back for more!
